At night the Black Pearl's crew appears as skeletons. It does not attack the player unless attacked, in which case it will destroy the player. However, Barbossa is set as the ship's default captain in the game's code. Disney paid Akella to call it Pirates of the Caribbean for publicity reasons. The ship was originally called The Black Frigate in the original drafts of the game (originally entitled Sea Dogs II). The Black Pearl makes an appearance but it's not the same ship as in the movies (the game takes place in the 1630's aside from the 1720-1750 POTC time frame) and it was only named so to have a relationship to the movie. There are many side quests in-game, for example, Nathaniel helps the Dutch colonist find several lost children. The governor then sends Nathaniel to run several quests until Nathaniel meets an old inventor who helps him find a treasure that could defeat the evil ghost ship, the Black Pearl. He manages to slip away and warn the English Governor on Redmond Island that Oxbay is attacked. As he leaves Oxbay the French attack the colony and capture it. Nathaniel's first mate is retiring and he needs to spice things up a little. The game is still considered a sequel to Sea Dogs in Akella's native Russia, where it is referred to as Corsairs II, with Corsairs ( Корсары) being the title of the original game in Russia. Apart from the pirate theme, the setting and the presence of the pirate ship called the Black Pearl, the game otherwise has few connections to the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl film, which was released around the same time as the game. The game was originally developed under the name Sea Dogs II, and was to be the sequel to Sea Dogs, which was released in the year 2000.
